Your first RC race can feel exciting and a little intimidating. Other drivers may know the track, bring toolboxes full of parts, or make their cars look effortless through every corner. You do not need to match their pace on day one.
Your goal is simple: arrive with a working car, complete your runs, and learn something each time you drive. A little preparation makes that much easier.
Understand the event before you arrive
RC events can use very different formats. One race might reward your fastest lap, while another counts how many laps you finish within a set time. A crawler competition may use gates, time limits and penalties instead of laps.
Read the organiser’s rules and check:
- Which vehicle scales and classes can enter
- Whether there are restrictions on batteries, tyres or modifications
- How each round is scored
- Whether charging is available at the venue
- When registration and practice begin
Knowing the format helps you prepare the right car and practise the right skills.
Inspect your RC car at home
Give the vehicle a careful check before packing it. Make sure the steering moves freely and returns close to centre. Test forward, reverse and braking response. Spin the wheels by hand and look for anything caught around the axles or drivetrain.
Check accessible screws, wheel nuts and body clips. Look for damaged tyres, loose connectors or suspension parts that do not move smoothly. If you find a problem, you have time to fix it at home.
Changed a part recently? Take the car for a short test drive. A repair or upgrade is only ready for racing once you have checked how it behaves on the ground.
Prepare your batteries and transmitter
Check that the car battery and transmitter are ready for the event. Use a charger and settings appropriate for your battery, and follow its instructions for charging, transport and storage. Do not bring a visibly damaged or swollen pack to use at the track.
If you have more than one suitable battery, label them so you can keep track of which pack has been used. Remember to pack any batteries needed by your transmitter as well.
Pack a useful race kit
You do not need to bring your entire workshop. Start with the items most likely to help you finish the day.

Pack the kit the night before. On race morning, you can focus on getting to the venue on time.
Practise finishing clean laps
New racers often concentrate on maximum speed. Consistency is usually a better first target. A fast lap followed by a crash can cost more time than several slightly slower, clean laps.
During practice, brake before a corner and begin accelerating as the car straightens. Look toward the next section of track instead of staring directly at the car. Notice where the surface offers grip and where you need to slow down.
Try completing five laps in a row without hitting a barrier. Once you can do that, gradually increase your pace.
Share the track thoughtfully
Other drivers are also watching their cars and planning their lines. Leave room when overtaking and avoid sudden changes of direction around another vehicle. Listen to the organiser’s instructions about where to stand, when to drive and how cars are retrieved.
If your car stops on the track, follow the event’s procedure. Do not walk onto an active course without instruction.
Learn from each round
After a run, think about one thing that worked and one thing to improve. Perhaps you braked too late at a particular corner, or your car handled better after you took a wider line. Focus on one adjustment for the next round.
Race day is also a chance to meet other hobbyists. Watch how experienced drivers approach the course and ask questions when they have time. Your first event should leave you with ideas for your next drive.
