Why a small clearance matters
The pinion and spur gears transfer motor rotation into the drivetrain.
Their teeth must engage correctly, with suitable clearance between them. This relationship is called gear mesh.
If engagement is too tight, the gears may bind. If it is too loose, the teeth may not engage adequately under load.
Correct mesh helps the drivetrain operate smoothly, but it also depends on compatible gears, secure mounts, and healthy supporting components.
Replacing a stripped spur without investigating the cause may result in another failure.
Mesh and gear ratio are different
Gear ratio concerns the relationship between the gears’ tooth counts. Gear mesh concerns their physical engagement.
Changing the pinion size changes the ratio and normally requires the mesh to be checked again.
The two gears must also use compatible tooth specifications, such as the appropriate module or pitch. Matching tooth counts alone does not establish compatibility.
Check bore size, width, mounting arrangement, and the manufacturer’s approved gear combinations.

These observations help guide inspection. They are not proof that spacing is the only problem.
Begin with the battery disconnected
Remove the battery before working near gears.
Open the gear cover according to the manual and inspect the teeth. Look for missing teeth, embedded debris, loose hardware, or signs that the motor mount has moved.
Check that the pinion sits at the correct position along the motor shaft and engages the intended width of the spur.
Do not adjust the gears around an obstruction or damaged tooth.
Adjustable and fixed mounting systems
Some vehicles allow the motor to slide so you can set the clearance. Others use fixed positions, indexed mounts, or inserts for approved gear combinations.
The correct procedure depends on the design.
Do not force a fixed-position arrangement into a different location. Likewise, do not assume every adjustable mount uses the same clearance-setting technique.
Read the model’s instructions before loosening hardware.
The paper method
For certain adjustable systems, manufacturers describe placing a strip of paper between the gears while setting their spacing. Traxxas publishes this method for applicable electric models. traxxas.com
The paper is then removed, and the gears are checked.
Treat this as a model-specific method rather than a universal precision gauge. Paper thickness, gear size, and mounting design vary.
The finished assembly still needs inspection through a complete rotation.
Check the entire spur gear
Rotate the assembly manually as instructed and check for tight spots.
A gear can have slight variation through its rotation. Clearance must remain appropriate at the tightest point rather than only where you first measured it.
If engagement changes significantly, investigate damaged gears, displaced bearings, bent shafts, or insecure mounts.
Do not compensate for serious mechanical faults by making the whole mesh excessively loose.
Why gears may strip even after adjustment
Poor mesh is only one possible cause.
Other contributors can include debris, damaged mounts, loose motor screws, worn supporting parts, or abrupt drivetrain loads.
A pinion that shifts along the shaft can also reduce engagement. Use the specified installation procedure for its retaining screw, including any required thread treatment.
Threadlocker is not suitable for every screw or surrounding material, so follow the instructions.
Common mistakes to avoid
Avoid adjusting gears with the battery connected, ignoring tooth compatibility, and checking only one position.
Do not judge mesh exclusively by sound. Different materials and drivetrain designs produce different noises.
After servicing, refit the cover and perform a short, controlled test.
Final thoughts
Good gear mesh starts with compatible, undamaged components and secure mounting.
Use your vehicle’s adjustment procedure, check engagement through a full rotation, and investigate the reason behind a stripped gear before replacing it.
