Your RC Car Has More Going On Than You Think
Pull the trigger and your car accelerates. Turn the steering wheel and it changes direction. Beneath the body, several components work together to make that happen.
Understanding them makes the hobby more rewarding. You can recognise what needs attention, choose useful upgrades and avoid buying a part simply because it looks impressive.
Let us take a tour of an electric RC car—and explore components you can shop for at MRC Hobbies.
1. Batteries: The Energy Behind Every Run
A battery supplies the energy your vehicle needs. When choosing another pack, start with compatibility rather than capacity alone.
Check the approved chemistry and cell count, connector, dimensions and battery tray. A bigger pack may not fit, and increasing voltage beyond the vehicle’s rating can damage equipment.
When to consider buying: You want another compatible pack for your driving sessions, or your existing battery needs replacement.
Before ordering: Send us your model number and a clear photograph of the battery label and connector.

2. Chargers: Match the Equipment to the Battery
A charger must support your battery’s chemistry, cell count and charging requirements. A matching plug alone does not establish compatibility.
MRC Hobbies lists the MJX HyperGo P2050 USB charger for supported 2S 7.4V LiPo batteries. Check the specific battery and connection before choosing it.
When to consider buying: Your original charger needs replacement, or you need suitable charging equipment for your battery collection.
Follow the battery and charger instructions. Do not charge damaged or swollen packs, and supervise charging.

3. Steering Servos: Making Your Inputs Count
The steering servo moves the steering linkage in response to your radio commands. If the vehicle struggles to steer or behaves inconsistently, investigate the whole steering system before replacing it.
A binding linkage, loose horn, damaged servo saver or unsuitable power supply can also affect steering.
When to consider buying: A diagnosed servo fault, or a planned upgrade suited to your vehicle.
Before ordering: Check dimensions, mounting holes, operating voltage, spline, connector and electronics compatibility.
For MJX 20208 owners, MRC Hobbies lists the PS17A 9G digital steering servo as a replacement for that truck. It is a model-specific example, rather than a universal replacement.

4. Tyres and Wheels: Where Your Setup Meets the Ground
Power is only useful when the tyres can work with the surface. A crawler climbing a rock and a buggy racing on dirt need different tyre characteristics.
When selecting wheels and tyres, check wheel diameter, mounting style, hex size, offset, overall tyre dimensions and body clearance.
Larger or heavier tyres also change the load on the steering and drivetrain. Choose them as part of a considered setup.
When to consider buying: Worn tyres, damaged wheels or a change in the terrain you drive on.
Try this: Describe your usual driving surface when enquiring. “Mostly smooth rock and wooden bridges” gives us more useful information than “I want better tyres.”
5. Gears, Shafts and Drivetrain Parts: Passing Power Along
Gears and shafts transfer power from the motor towards the wheels. Clicking, grinding or loss of drive calls for inspection rather than an automatic upgrade purchase.
For replacement gears, match the exact part number, dimensions, tooth count and gear pitch or module. For shafts, check length, joints and the specific model version.
Metal components can change durability, weight and where loads are transferred. They should be selected for the intended purpose.
When to consider buying: A confirmed damaged component, or a compatible upgrade with a clear goal.

6. Suspension Components: Keeping the Wheels Working
Shocks, springs and suspension links help the wheels respond to uneven ground. If your car bounces, leans or sits unevenly, first inspect for leaks, damage, binding and incorrect settings.
A new shock must fit the mounting points and allow suitable travel. Springs and oil should be chosen around the model and use.
When to consider buying: A damaged suspension part or a deliberate setup change.

7. Motors, ESCs and Radio Equipment: Plan Compatibility First
The motor drives the vehicle. The electronic speed controller manages motor operation. The transmitter and receiver carry your control commands.
These components need to work together. Motor type, ESC ratings, approved battery voltage, mounting, connectors and receiver compatibility matter.
Some vehicles use integrated electronics, which can make replacement more involved than changing one component.
When to consider buying: A confirmed fault or a planned conversion after compatibility checks.

Turn Your Next Purchase into a Useful Improvement
The most satisfying upgrade is one you can explain: “This replaces my damaged servo,” “These tyres suit my course,” or “This charger supports my battery setup.”
Send MRC Hobbies your model number, existing part number, photographs and intended use. We can discuss suitable options and confirm current availability.
